Real Feedback from Role vs Roll Play testing
So I'm really big on feedback. It's more important then you would think.. its the key to making an amazing game.
In this case "Howl Philinish" was kind enough to allow me to post his feedback. It is important to know Howl was using the print and play that only has 12 of the 30 cards. (We hope to have as much as 45 cards with the Kickstarter)
I am also assuming they were using D&D (Though Role Vs Roll will work with any system)
I let fate decide, they all were given to 2 random cards and told to choose one to accomplish. I asked them each to write 1 or 2 sentences that describes their thoughts. These are their feedback at the end of session written by them:
Ella, Party Rogue, Card: Greed – “Good idea helps ideas form to vary experiences. I think perhaps there could be class specific stuff. I’m a rogue and got the greed card (easy). So maybe do cards to challenge each class. Nice job though.”
Ella accomplished her card by looting EVERYTHING. And I mean, everything. She horded the treasure then buried it.
Tim, Party Ranger, Card: Try a Stunt – “Encouraging variation in game play is always a worthy goal. Try not to have any objectives that disrupt the flow of the story too far out of the oridinary.”
Tim drove and arrow into the head of an Orge and “drove” it around, riding it like a bull.
Alex, Party Gnomish Scholar, Card: Oooh my favorite – “ It pushed me out of my normal roleplay style, put me up in the spotlight more. Gave more flavor to my character that I hadn’t thought about yet. Appreciated how my card could be completed by any character regardless of class”
Alex went out of his way to prepare tea and made tea, teaching and research his most favorite things. I do believe he called the other players his student’s as he started giving his ‘Lesson’.
Steven, Party Warlock and Pyromaniac, Card: Be the Best - “I liked the framework provided, it was helpful the bonus incentive was a nice touch”
Ill go ahead and say Steve is the one out the group that HATES Roleplay. He cant do it and has almost given up but today he used his horrible rolls in combat as an excuse to have the ranger help him learn to shoot. The ranger threw apples and Steve rolled his dice to hit the apples but instead of paying attention to the number (more than if it was above or below 10) he actually laughed and said “I guess I can hit things” and for once in a LONG time I saw him actually have a glimmer of role play.
My opinion on the first run: It was a success. The look on their faces as they tried to think of how to accomplish the goals and it brought out more character than I had ever seen in them. I am very excited to show this to the Saturday group who, honestly, are the most unable to roleplay bunch I have ever ran for. I think this might just break them into what Roleplaying is all about.
More responses will be incoming, as I said on twitter I have other groups funneling responses to me which I will promptly forward to you!
Always happy to help!
